College Writing Curriculum
Florida Atlantic University
Fall 2017 - Spring 2020
Refreshing state-mandated curriculum.
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is one of the most diverse college campuses in the country, serving many working students, first-generation college students, and L2 speakers of English.
During my MFA at FAU, I taught freshman-level courses in college writing and developed new curriculum to better serve my students.
Content that engaged writers through comedy.
With a goal to boost students’ writing confidence and engagement, one of my courses used concepts from comedy writing to teach college writing principles. I organized students into small groups that met regularly throughout the term, where students practiced writing skills using improv techniques and supported each other in their writing development.
During end-of-term evaluations, students reported high relevance of the curriculum to their lives and increased writing confidence. “Amazing class. I learned so much about who I am as a writer,” one student commented.
